Book Blitz: Morgan Is Missing

Author: K. Hanson.
Genre: New Adult, Thriller.

Kayla Falk is trying to move past the traumatic events of her mission in Syria and settle into a comfortable engineering job. However, when Morgan Bellamy, the younger sister of Kayla’s late best friend, disappears while on vacation, Kayla doesn’t hesitate to jump into action to find her. As Kayla investigates, she learns that Morgan has become trapped in a hellish human trafficking situation. Kayla is determined to find Morgan before she slips into the shadows forever.

Content Warning: This book is about sex trafficking. While I avoid explicit, graphic depictions of sexual violence, due to the nature of the subject matter, it is definitely implied that it takes place.

Blue eyes and a laughing smile, framed by wavy golden hair.
Those blue eyes stared back at Kayla Falk as she looked at the picture on her desk of her best friend Olivia. Her late best friend, that is. Even now, more than a year after returning from Syria, Kayla couldn’t quite believe that she’d never again hear the laugh that went with that smile. She had hoped the pain would fade away after enough time in a calm engineering job in Minneapolis, but it never did. It just lingered and, if anything, became heavier with time.
“Hey, Kayla!”
The shout tore her from her thoughts. Kayla blinked away the tears that had formed in her green eyes and turned her swivel chair around to see Olivia’s blue eyes looking back at her.
Except, they weren’t Olivia’s.
These eyes belonged to Morgan, Olivia’s younger sister, who stood in the doorway to Kayla’s office. “Hey, Morgan.” Her voice broke, though she smiled at the sight of her friend. “What are you doing here?”
“Are you all right?” asked Morgan, tilting her head.
Kayla cleared her throat. “Just have a tickle in my throat.”
“If you say so. Anyway, just stopping in to say bye to my dad before I meet up with Amanda and head out to the Black Hills. You know, you should really come with us,” said Morgan.
“I wish I could, but I really need to get some work done here.” Kayla gestured to the pile of paperwork that had spilled from its tray and invaded the rest of her desk.
Morgan rolled her eyes and brushed a strand of brown hair out of her face. “Come on. You work for my dad. He’ll let you come if you want to.”
“I’m sure he would. But he’s not the only one waiting for me.” Kayla waved around at the offices of the other engineers. “I have a pile of schematics to finish and pass along.”
“You still working on that wind turbine prototype?” Morgan asked.
“Yup, that’s it. It’s not quite coming along the way I’d hoped it would.”
“Don’t worry. You’ll figure it out. Maybe a nice break would inspire you a bit.” Morgan gave Kayla an encouraging smile. “If you can’t get away for a few days, can you at least come to lunch? I can text Amanda to wait a bit longer.”
“Sure, I can make that work.” Kayla turned around to lock her computer. “Where were you thinking of eating?” She threw her coat over her shoulders and walked out of her office with Morgan.
“How about we just hit that sandwich shop down the street?” Morgan suggested. “It’s not far, and they have decent food.”
“Sounds good to me.”
As they headed downstairs, Kayla asked, “How’s the new laptop working out?”
“I love it! It’ll be a big help this next semester. Thanks again. That was quite a Christmas present.”
They stepped out onto the street, with the chill air of the Minnesota winter greeting them and snowflakes floating through the air.
“Don’t worry about it. From what I saw of the old one, you really needed it.”
“For sure. Now it won’t take me eighty years to just open a browser tab.”
They arrived at the restaurant and placed their orders at the counter.
Once they had gotten their food, they carried their trays over to a corner booth and sat down. Between bites of her hot roast beef sandwich, Kayla asked, “So, what are your plans in the Black Hills?”
Morgan shrugged. “We don’t have a lot of concrete plans. I know we’re going to be in Deadwood for New Year’s, but we’re going to be in the Hills for a week after that. I’m not sure how we’ll fill the time. We’ll probably just make it up as we go.”
“That’s a good way to do it. There’s a lot to do and see out there so you won’t get bored.”
“Yeah, I know it’s cold, but there’s some beautiful scenery around there. Just driving through the Hills would be awesome.”
“Why did you decide to go to Deadwood for New Year’s?”
“I’ve heard it can be quite the party. Tons of people come out, and they do fireworks at midnight. Sounds like some of our friends are going to be there as well, so we’re ho Tuping to run into them.”
“I hope you enjoy your last winter break. After this year, you won’t get time off like this again.”
“I know, but I am excited to finish school and finally do something for real.” Morgan flashed a smile and let out a bubbly giggle. “Did I tell you I got that pharmacist position at the children’s hospital?”
Kayla laughed. “You’ve only mentioned it a couple hundred times. I am happy for you, though. It seems like a perfect fit for you.”
“Yeah, after all of the volunteering I’ve done with the children’s hospital, I want to be somewhere I can make a real difference, not just stuck behind a counter at Walmart or something like that.”
“And Sioux Falls isn’t very far away, so you can come back to visit pretty easily.”
“Exactly.” Morgan finished her sandwich and crumpled up the paper wrapping, then checked her phone. “Looks like Amanda is outside with her car. I suppose we should get going. Rapid City is supposed to get some snow tonight, and we want to be there before it hits.”
“Okay. I’ll walk out with you.”
The two of them threw their sandwich wrappers away and walked out the door. Morgan found Amanda’s car and walked up to it. Kayla smiled at Amanda when they made eye contact through the car window. As Morgan reached for the handle, she looked back. “Hey, Kayla, before I head off, have you actually met Amanda?”
“I think I saw her maybe once. Didn’t she pick you up from our sparring practice once?”
Morgan opened the door. “Hey Amanda, come out and meet Kayla.”
Amanda came around the car, her long black hair lying over her shoulders. “I finally get to meet the badass who took out those terrorists at the Union,” she said with a grin.
Kayla touched her collarbone and glanced away. “Yeah, that was me . . . and Olivia.”
“Kayla doesn’t really like to talk about it, Amanda,” said Morgan.
“Sorry, that didn’t come out right. It’s just . . . my brother was one of the people they shot and I wanted to thank you. For what it’s worth, I’m sorry about Olivia. She was always kind to me.”
Kayla gave her a nod and a small smile, then turned to Morgan. “I really should get back to work.”
Morgan placed a hand on Kayla’s shoulder. “Are you sure you can’t ride with us for a couple of laps around the block? I don’t really think my dad is running a stopwatch on your lunch breaks, especially since he knows you’re out with me. Just take it easy and enjoy the time we have together.”
Kayla laughed. “Not now, but we’ll all go out when you get back.”
“If you really have to get back, I’ll let you go.” Morgan pulled the door open and slid into the passenger seat as Amanda went back to the driver’s side.
“Have a safe trip!” said Kayla as she waved to them.
“We will! See you in a week!” Morgan waved.

Kayla sat upright at her keyboard and heard a knock at her office door. She turned around to see David, her boss and Morgan’s father, standing in the doorway. His brow was scrunched with worry, and his Bellamy-blue eyes had bags underneath.
“Kayla, can I talk to you for a moment?” he asked.
“Sure. You look stressed. What’s wrong?”
“Have you heard from Morgan at all?”
Kayla shook her head. “Not since her ‘Happy New Year’ text a week ago. Why?”
David stepped into the room and pulled the door shut. “I haven’t heard anything from her either. I didn’t want to worry about it too much since she’s on vacation, and you know how she is about responding when she’s busy. But they were supposed to be back yesterday. I’ve tried texting and calling her a few times and haven’t gotten anything back.”
“Maybe she just lost her phone. I’m sure Deadwood was crazy that night.”
“I’ve talked to Amanda’s mom, and she’s not having any luck either. Somehow, I doubt they’ve both managed to lose their phones at the same time. And even if they did, they’d have called to let us know they were going to be coming late.”
Kayla frowned. It did seem strange that they would both drop off the grid simultaneously. “Do you think something’s happened to them?”
David shrugged and shook his head. “I have no idea. I haven’t seen anything in the news, at least.” He looked down and wrung his hands before looking back at Kayla. “Would you do me a favor and head out to the Black Hills to see if you can find her? I’d go myself, but I need to look after things here, and I don’t want to be the overprotective father if it’s nothing. I know you’re trying to wrap up this project, but it’s keeping me up at night to think that something could happen to her.”
Tears welled in his eyes and his voice caught in his throat. “I can’t lose Morgan, too.”
Kayla looked over at the photo of Olivia, with Morgan’s same sapphire eyes looking back at her. Kayla still hadn’t told David or Morgan that she had been the one to kill Olivia to spare her from a painful death after being poisoned. I can’t lose Morgan, either, Kayla thought.
“Yes,” she said as she stood up. “I’ll find Morgan. She’s the closest I have to a sister. Everything else can wait.”
“Really? Thank you so much, Kayla.” David wrapped Kayla in a tight embrace. “I always forget that you’re nearly my height until I hug you.”
Kayla returned the hug for a moment but quickly stepped back and glanced away from David. “You don’t need to thank me. You’ve lost one of your daughters already because of me.” Her voice trailed off. After a moment, she clenched her jaw and fixed his eyes with hers. “Now, I’m going to bring the other one back to you.”
“You know I don’t blame you for what happened to Olivia. I know you did your best.”
Kayla held up her hand to stop David from speaking. “I know you don’t blame me, but I blame me because it was my fault.”
He stepped toward her, but Kayla put a firm hand on his shoulder. “I don’t feel like arguing about it. Where do you think I should start looking for Morgan?”
David shook his head. “I don’t really have any clues to offer you. The last place I knew she visited is Deadwood. I don’t know anything more specific than that. She has some pictures up on Facebook, though. Maybe you could look through those to see if any of them would help.”
“I’ll do that. I’ll just head home now to start packing and thinking about where to look.”
“Yes, please. Get started as soon as possible.”
Kayla took a long stride through the door and turned toward the stairs to leave, then turned back. “David,” she said, causing him to look back at her, “I’ll find her. I promise.”

Book Blitz: Skerryvore

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Mystery.

Teenage twins Rose and Daniel aren’t allowed phones, computers, even a TV, thanks to their conspiracy-obsessed father. But when the people he always thought were after him actually turn up, the twins realise he wasn’t as paranoid as they’d always thought.
With their dad missing and their house burned to the ground, Rose and Daniel find themselves at the centre of a worldwide conspiracy that stretches back through the ages, involving some of the most powerful and mysterious organisations on the planet.
Why them? Why their dad? The answers to these questions and other, darker mysteries lie beyond the doors of an ancient house called Skerryvore.
These mysteries link the twins to a Dark Age king and queen, to a secret society that stands behind the City of London, and an energy source that links some of the world’s most ancient sites into a network that has the power – literally – to change the world.
Skerryvore is the first book in the Dark Net series.

Daniel took a deep breath. It must be right. This must be the last piece in Mr Picketty’s jigsaw that led to the secret of Skerryvore – a sword in a stone. He couldn’t just be imagining this.
He had to have faith.
Daniel closed his eyes and went through the technique Mr Humblestone had taught them for being in the present. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Empty your mind of thoughts. Listen to the sounds around you. What can you hear? He could hear the sound of waves and gunfire echoing around the metallic roof of the chamber. What can you feel? The cold sea air against his face, the hard ground against the soles of his feet, the movement of his ribcage up and down and the beating of his heart inside it. What can you smell? The smell of the sea, the metal and oil of machinery. Now open your eyes. What can you see? He opened his eyes. He could see a sword standing in a stone with no thoughts attached to it, no hopes or fears.
Just a sword in a stone.
He reached out and wrapped his fingers around the cool leather of the hilt. He closed his eyes and pulled.
With a scraping of metal on stone the sword came free in his hand, so easily in fact that he stumbled backwards and fell to the floor dropping it with a harsh clattering noise that echoed around the chamber.
Then, slowly, another sound began to rise and overtake the first. It was a sound that came from all around, like some huge and rusty gate that hadn't been oiled in centuries. Looking up, Daniel saw that the roof of the observatory was moving, but not in the usual way. This time it was moving outwards and away from the building, like giant hands were peeling it back. The noise roared to a deafening crescendo and Daniel watched in horror as the two sides of the roof leant outwards, balanced precariously for what felt like an eternity, then toppled and fell to the rocks below like two giant petals dropping from a flower.
He was suddenly alone on a windy platform, above the sea, under the night sky.
And behind him something else was moving.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Not Her Gargoyle

Author: Annie Nicholas.
Genre: Paranormal Romance.

Blurb:

Ruby is done with jerks, dead-end jobs, and eviction notices. Everyone else she knows is finding ways out of this crappy neighborhood, so why can’t she? Since opportunities refuse to fall from the sky, Ruby makes her own. To hell with the little voice in her heart whispering about love. She never met a man she wanted to keep…then she met a gargoyle. Men were boring after all.

Nick was a con, a thief, and a rogue. He couldn’t keep a dime in his pocket even if it was glued. Then he met a ruby. Not one from the earth but one of flesh and blood. And ass. Let’s not forget the ass. Stealing her heart was now all he wanted.

He has a plan that could make both their dreams come true. It only involves an itsy-bitsy risk. All they must do is rob a witch.

Oh, and avoid the dragons.

Excerpt:

Ruby and her dress attracted all sorts of wrong attention on the way home. The worst was still trailing her, keeping to the shadows. It looked like only one guy. She hoped. For all she knew, he was herding her into a trap.
She crossed the street. Maybe the creeper would take a hint and realize she was onto him. A few steps more and she glanced over her shoulder.
Of course, he followed.
The liquor store was closed. It was the only place that would have been open this late. She balled her hands into fists. Fine, they’d do this the hard way. She turned the corner and spun around, pepper spray in hand.
The stalker came around the corner. His eyes widened at the sight of her.
Hers went wide as well at the sight of the winged beast landing behind the creeper. The creature picked up the stalker and shook him. “Leave her alone,” he shouted and tossed him to the other side of the street.
Ruby pressed the release button just as the beast’s face was lit up by a passing car. She gasped. Oh no, she recognized him.
He howled and covered his face, wings beating the air aimlessly, forcing some of the spray in her direction.
Bending over, she choked on the acidic air. She fell to her knees. Dumbass, she couldn’t believe she’d gasped in the pepper spray. That was such a rookie move but—but… “Nick,” she rasped and crawled toward him. “I’m so sorry.” At least, she thought it was Nick. “That is, you, right?”
“Yes.” He collapsed next to her, eyes bloodshot and raw. “You pepper sprayed me.” He sounded so hurt. Like she’d kicked his puppy.
Her heart stopped beating at light speed and she slapped his meaty shoulder. “You scared the shit out of me.” He’d also saved her. She wasn’t sure what to say. No one had ever done that before.
“I was trying to help you.” He wiped his nose with the back of his hand. “Fuck, this stuff burns.”
She coughed some more. “I know.” Her lungs felt like she’d blown up a hundred balloons. All at once.
“I need to rinse my eyes before they melt.” He rose on wobbly legs and peered into the night as if looking for a source of water.
“Come on.” She grabbed his big wrist and tugged. “You can use my bathroom to wash off.” She sounded like a three pack a day smoker. “It’s the least I can do.”
She scanned the street and there was no sign of her would-be attacker. Guiding Nick, she took him to her apartment building. She climbed the staircase to the top, leaning heavily on the rails. Fear had sapped the strength from her legs. Luckily, they didn’t encounter any of the other tenants. Who knew how they’d react to an eight-foot winged, muscle bound creature with bloodshot eyes?
She had hurt the gargoyle who had accidentally killed her sister. She should feel good about that, but he had also rescued her from Trixie when her sister had been blood crazed.
It wasn’t like Nick had pushed Trixie down those stairs. He had startled her, kind of like how he had startled Ruby when she’d pepper sprayed him. That was a bad habit he had to break.
A yellow paper was stuck to her apartment door. She unlocked it and entered, peeling the paper off as she walked through. She was quite familiar with eviction notices.
“This way.” She maneuvered the huge gargoyle and his wings through her small apartment to the bathroom and sat him on the edge of the tub. She ducked under a random wing spasm. “Stay still. You almost knocked me flat.”
“Sorry.” He pulled his wings in tight behind his back and they quivered.
Pouring water onto a face cloth, she waited for the coldness. She added soap and washed his face. Pepper spray was mixed in with an oily compound and soap did the best job to clean it off skin. As for poor Nick’s eyes, all she could offer were cold compresses.
He leaned into her touch, his hands snaking around her waist.
“Easy, mister.” Excitement fluttered in her stomach.
His cheeks were a darker gray in comparison to the rest of his skin. Broad shoulders filled the narrow space and his hands were big enough to wrap right around her. So huge and strong.
She almost purred. Funny how one supernatural had her running and this one made her want to rub against him. “Long time no see, Nick. I thought you had forgotten all about me.” She’d made it clear she found him attractive the last time they met. He’d never come back and she’d assumed the feeling wasn’t mutual.
“The dragons chained me to their castle after I helped Trixie escape.” He pulled her hand away from his face and kissed her knuckles. “What were you doing walking by yourself at this time of the night?”
She blinked at the reprimand. Because she had no one else to walk with wasn’t something she was ready to admit. “I can take care of myself, thank you very much.”
He kissed the tips of her fingers, one by one. “I noticed.”
The bathroom grew quiet as she watched him kiss the fingertips of her other hand. He sucked the oxygen from the room with those kisses and her head spun. “Want a beer?” she whispered with a rough voice. “I’d like to hear about your dragon adventure.”
Seriously, dragons and bondage. Roar. It was Christmas all over again.
“Sure.” He refreshed his cold compress before reapplying it to his eyes.
“Follow me.” She strode into the kitchen that was attached to the living room and opened her fridge. A half empty six-pack of beer, a bottle of ketchup, and a container of yogurt were the only things it contained. She pulled out two bottles and held one up to him.
He grinned and popped it open with his thumb. She bit her bottom lip. It had been a twist off. Damn. “Thanks, but my story is short. The dragons wanted to punish me for what happened with Trixie. I escaped tonight and wanted to make sure Trixie was adjusting to being a vampire.” He took a drink from the bottle and drained half of it.
“Oh.” Ruby clutched her unopened bottle. “She’s fine. Better than fine.” Better than her. “She moved in with that vampire.”
“Viktor?” He drained the remainder of his bottle.
“Yeah, they live over his tattoo parlor.” She offered Nick her beer. “That’s really sweet of you to drop in and check on her though.” She cleared her throat, wishing some strange guy would bother to do that with her. “You know, in the middle of your escape from the dragons and all.” She glanced out the window. “Is Eoin going to show up here again?” She hoped not. He scared her. It was one thing to admire a dragon from afar—quite another when he clung to her building with his claws.
Nick shook his head. “I lost him over the river. He won’t think to look for me here.” He finally met her gaze. “You look nice.”
She smoothed her dress over her hips, feeling self-conscious. “Thanks.” Three simple words yet the way he said them made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. She pressed her lips together and tried to figure out what to do with her hands now that they were empty. “Umm… have a seat.” What was wrong with her? Men never made her feel shy.
He settled on the couch, his wings taking up most of the space. “How have you been?” He leaned forward, elbows on knees, and…waited.
“Uh.” She sat in the chair next to him.
He leaned closer, still waiting.
“I’m broke, about to be homeless, and I hate my job.” She released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. It felt good to just let it all out.
“You have a job. That’s good.”
She gave him a crooked smile. “That’s a positive way to look at it.”

Excerpt:

”And if you’d acted before you did, defied your mother and refused her order to kill him, do you believe you could’ve won?”

“Honestly?  I don’t know.  It doesn’t matter.  For all we know we could’ve stopped it long before Gene.  Aunt Margaret just kept telling us to be patient, that the catalyst would show itself.  We rallied against my mother more because Pauline was in danger, not so much because of Eddie.  To me, that was the ultimate incentive to proceed. Seeing her in danger was the reason we stood so strong together.”

“Maybe your aunt knew a human wasn’t a strong enough reason to fight such an epic war.  I mean, you might’ve rallied behind Gene, but could you say the others in your resistance would?  With everything Gilcrest has told you, you’ve got magic in you, Fawna. You stood a chance against your mother.  Your aunt probably knew that.”
“You may be right, but it doesn’t matter.  I’ve committed some terrible atrocities.”

“Because you were scared!  You didn’t have a choice. I wasn’t even here and I can see that.”  He clanged his knuckles against the cast iron frame of the cauldron.

“You said you wanted to give this old heirloom a second chance, an opportunity to be used for good.  Why can’t you give yourself that chance? Cut yourself a break.”
A smile cracked on my lips, and I shook my head in exasperation.

“Why is it you always insist on seeing the good in me, even now when there’s none to be found?”

“There’s plenty of good in you, Fawna.  If there wasn’t, you wouldn’t be so ready to risk your soul to rescue the ones you love the most.”

“There’s no talking any sense into you, is there?”  I wrapped my arms around his torso, using his weight to anchor myself in place.

“Not a chance,” he grinned, planting a sweet kiss on my cheek.  “I’m not going anywhere. It’s like I said before, Queen, my heart is yours and only yours.  The sea is in my blood, always has been. Now I know why. I was meant for this life, down here with you and Sebastian.  Don’t take it away from me because of a past you can’t outrun.”
