Review & Giveaway: A Heart In The Right Place

Author: Heidi Goody and Ian Grant.
Genre: Horror Comedy, Fiction.
Rating: -

Blurb:

All Nick wants to do is take his dying father for a perfect father-son weekend in the Scottish Highlands. It’s not much to ask, is it? A log cabin, a roaring fire, a bottle of fine whisky and two days to paper over the cracks in their relationship.

However, Nick didn’t plan on making the trip with a dead neighbour in the back of his car. Or the neighbour’s dog. He really didn’t plan on being pursued by a psychotic female assassin intent on collecting body parts. And he really, really didn’t plan on encountering a platoon of heavily armed mercenaries, or some very hungry boars, or a werewolf.

A Heart in the Right Place - a horror comedy about setting out with the very best intentions and then messing everything up.

Cover Review:

The cover is okay, not overtly interesting, but the idea of the cover did spark my interest.

Book Review:

Unfortunately, I couldn't read the book in time for the tour because of some personal issues. But I can tell you that I've read another of the authors' books, and it was really good! So I'm hoping this one will be too.

You can read my review of the other book here: A Spell In The Country.

Review + Giveaway: The Cuckoo Wood

Author: M. Sean Coleman.
Genre: Mystery, Suspense, Thriller.
Rating: đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«đŸ«

Samantha Jaynes took her life in the cold lake. Now Rosie Trimble has done the same. Both claimed they had seen an angel. And they're not the only ones.
A spate of teenage suicides rattles the rural community of Kirkdale, in England's Lake District. Before they died, each of the girls talked about seeing an angel. Is this collective hallucination, or is something more sinister leading these young girls to their deaths?
That's a question for Dr Alex Ripley, the so-called Miracle Detective. Brought in to help the police, she finds a community rooted in fear and suspicion, bound by their strange faith, unwilling to help, unable to forgive.
Because the people of Kirkdale have buried their dark past once, and theyre not about to let Ripley dig it up again.

The cover is simply gorgeous. I love the matte finish and how the red of the title stands out. It's beautiful. (My copy has a slightly different cover than the one above.)

The Cuckoo Woods was a slow, mesmerising suspense, that pulled me in slowly, steadily.

I wasn't all into it in the beginning, but as it progressed, it got better and better.

Dr. Alex Ripley was a fun, adventurous protagonist, unafraid of poking into anything. It was fun to follow her as she solved the mystery of the Kirkdale Angel.

The mystery itself could've been better. I felt some of it wasn't as explained or as clear as it could have been. There are bits that could've been drawn out for more impact.

But overall, The Cuckoo Wood was an engaging read, light yet suspenseful.

Win a paperback copy of The Cuckoo Wood, a cool tote bag with book quote from the publisher, a branded bookmark and some chocolates!

A Special Post & A Giveaway!

Hey Bookworms,

Today's post is a little special.

As you all probably know, I recently decided publish my poetry collection. And those who know me know that I'm a pretty impatient person. And I'm also pretty impulsive.

So, I'm at my grandparents', and my aunt tells me that I should think about getting my poems published. And I know that's what I'm going to do.

The next day, I'm compiling the poems I think I should include in the collection. Impulsive, right?

I didn't realize then just how difficult it is to publish your book, even when you're self-publishing. There's so much to do!

Thankfully, I have the greatest friends ever, and my soul sister, Pravallika helped me with not just the book cover but also the editing of the book. We spent days and nights perfecting the book, making it readable and error free as possible.

Then there was my best friend, Namita, who helped me with sorting all the poems into three beautiful sections.

Though honestly speaking, the toughest part of the whole thing was formatting. I had to make separate copies for ebook and paperback. And both of them needed to be formatted differently. And I had to do it on my own, for once.

It's done now, and the book is almost out there, and I've never been so excited, scared and nervous all at the same time.

So, as a way to thank you, all of you who helped me in some way—all of the readers and authors and book bloggers, the people who inspired me to go ahead and put my work out there—I'm giving away 5 eBook copies of Scattered Constellations! I'll be doing a paperback to once it releases, but for now, I hope you will enjoy the eBook!

More about Scattered Constellations

Words tumble out, with no pause;
From the pen, my anelace,
That I hold so graciously,
(In awe of its majesty, its power)
In my hand.

They form thoughts, hopes and musings;
Reflect my soul, my entire being,
And spread across the page,
Like scattered constellations
Across the sky.
Scattered Constellations is a collection of 50 YA Free Verse poems.

Praise for Scattered Constellations:

Ankita's poetry is so well versed that you feel everything her words speak. From warm and fuzzy to ice cold, this is a book you will not want to put down!
-Sarah Kenney, Author of The Devil's Curse Novels.

Dark and beautifully heartrending in some places, Ankita's Scattered Constellations weaves a story that most people will experience in their lives but will never be able to fully explain using words. Surely a book of poetry that belongs on your bookshelf!
-K.G. Reuss, Author of The Emissary of The Devil Series.

Ankita's Scattered Constellations is a beautiful collection of short poems whose breadth of topics and ideas will captivate you. I was in love with this book and Ankita's words from cover to cover, and I know you will be too.
-Magnolia Robbins, Author of Forbidden Melody.

I think Ankita Singh is a very perceptive and talented young poet and definitely one to watch.
-Linda Hill, Blogger at Lindas Book Bag.

Interview: S.C.Cunningham, Author of Unfinished Business

Hey Bookworms!

Today I had the opportunity to have a chat with S.C. Cunningham, author of the psychological thriller, Unfinished Business.

Before continuing, let me introduce her to you!

British Author S C Cunningham (The Penance List, Unfinished Business and The Deal) creates psychological and paranormal thrillers with a skilled mix of fueled tension, dark humor, and pulsating sex scenes. Her works offer a fresh level of sincerity and authority, rare in fiction.

Cunningham writes what she knows. Abducted as a child, she survived; and every night for months afterward, she prayed to God, asking for a deal. This personal journey sparked the fuse behind the intriguing and riveting fictional world she portrays in The Deal, the first in the Fallen Angel Series. Twenty years later she crossed paths with a violent serial attacker, thus sowing the seed for her thrillers The Penance List and Unfinished Business part of The David Trilogy. She is currently working on Book III For My Sins.

An ex-model, British born of Irish roots, she married a rock musician and has worked in the exciting worlds of rock music, film, sports celebrity management and as a Crime Investigator for the Police – Wanted & Absconder Unit, Intelligence Analyst, Major Crime Team, Investigations Hub.

Having worked in the music to film industry, she writes with film in mind. The Penance List has been adapted to film screenplay.

Now, let's head on to the interview!

Unfinished Business sounds mind boggling. How did the idea take birth?

The David Trilogy was kick-started by an incident that happened to me in my twenties when I was living in London. Quite frighteningly and out of the blue, I crossed paths with a prolific serial attacker who targeted single girls living alone in basement flats in Notting Hill and Olympia. It was then that I realised evil can sit around any corner, learn to trust you gut.

This male haunted London for a long period of time; he was astute, studied his victims for days and avoided capture. I believe he attacked 14 or so women, luckily I got away unscathed (must have an Angel looking out for me) and managed to help Police ID him with a photo fit. He was a nice looking, well dressed, calm, cold, precise and unhurried. He didn’t say a word, just stared, seeming to revel in the fear he instilled.

I remember looking into his face and asking why? I needed to understand how a human could be that cruel to another. He had the look of a spoilt mother’s boy; I guessed his mother must have loved him at some stage, but what life changing event or who had turned him from a sweet little boy into an evil adult? The seed for complex protagonist David Howard was sown.

What was the toughest part of writing Unfinished Business?

David looking back on his childhood, the reason for his transformation from angelic choir boy to avenging killer.

Who is your inspiration, your idol?

That’s easy. Lee Child’s Jack Reacher Series. I adore Reacher, such a wonderful character.

If I was a bloke I’d love to live his simple lifestyle. No baggage, traveling with just a toothbrush and credit card, great intelligence, people skills and the strength of an ox – awesome!

I can’t quite forgive Child for selling out to Tom Cruise – Mr Cruise is lovely am sure, but he’s no Jack Reacher.

I also love the works of Agatha Christie, Martina Cole, Michael Connelly, James Patterson, Patricia Cornwell, Colin Dexter, Harlan Coben, John Grisham,  Nora Roberts, Karin Slaughter, David Baldacci.

What was your first piece of creative writing—other than school assignments? Has it been published?

The Penance List, Book I of The David Trilogy was my first piece of writing.
Yes it’s been published and adapted to film screenplay. Am honored.

What was the most enjoyable part of writing this book?

I loved the laughter between the girls and the cheeky banter between the boys.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Definitely go be the seat of my pants. If I knew the ending I SO would not go through the months of hard work. Knowing the end makes it boring for me. I want to be taken on a ride along with the readers. These books tend to write themselves.

If you were stuck in an elevator with David, what would you do?

There is a fab scene in The Penance List where Tara has an encounter with her lover in an elevator. I would deffo do that…. (smile)

What did you aspire to be when you were a kid?

A nun, because I liked their long romantic veil. Gosh… little did I know!!!

Which is your favourite book?

Love all Agatha Christie and Lee Child.

Which was the first novel you ever read? Did you ever re-read it?

I grew up with Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven. Then someone sneaked a copy of Harold Robbins’ The Carpetbaggers into school. Phew!! a bit of a shock.
No, I don’t want to spoil the magic.

Would you rather own a bookstore or a library?

A library, I’d fill it with a cozy coffee n’cocktail area, fireplace, smelly candles, soft music, gentle lighting, hammocks and reading nooks… and allow pets to snuggle up with.

What is the weirdest thing you ever had to research for a book?

When writing thrillers/crime you research many weird things, my google search history looks like a crime scene. I hope no Officers ever need to take it away for forensics

Blood splatter, gun caliber, length of various times to die, amount of pressure needed on throat for strangulation, hanging intel, suicide intel, mental health behavioral patterns, life span of insects, deterioration rate of body… and the list goes on.

Are you working on any new projects? What are they about?

Am working on book II of The Fallen Angel Series. A Paranormal Thriller -  Karma.
This mixes my criminal knowledge with my belief that there is something else out there. It’s based on a kidnap incident that happened to me as a child. Kick ass, naughty, crime-fighting angels that protect us. Love it, I get to tackle all subjects. Of course there romance and laughter mixed in with the murder mystery.

Am also working on book III of The David Trilogy - For My Sins.
Am gutted, I don’t want the trilogy to end… or does it?

The best moment of your life as a writer was?

My first reviews, they were 5 Stars.
I beamed internally for days. All the hard work paid off and people seemed to love my work… phew!!

Any quirky incidents to share with us?

When recording the audio book of The Penance List (book I of The David Trilogy) I had to stand in the recording booth with my back turned to the studio engineer for the whole month we worked on it. If I caught his eye I would have a fit of the giggles and have to start again, especially during the sexy bits. Bless him, he was very patient.

Thank you for joining us.

Siobhan x
S C Cunningham

Thank you for taking out time for this interview! I wish you good luck for your book!

Curious about the book? Here's some info about it:

He loved being him… he got away with murder.
She loved being her… until she met him.

The steamy roller coaster ride of psychotic David’s obsession with his childhood sweetheart, a skilled mix of fuelled tension, dark humour and pulsating sex scenes.

With the help of her gutsy friends, fun-loving city girl Tara Warr is the only victim to survive David Howard’s death list. Whilst lounging in prison the hypnotic sexual tour de force enlists an eager recruit, seduces a prison warden and relocates to the sunnier climes of Mexico, a freedom short-lived when his charred remains are found in the fire of a plastic surgeon’s clinic. The police cease their search, finally Tara and her friends can relax, David is dead.

Laughter soon turns to fear when he communicates via Tara’s laptop that he is very much alive, knows their every move and is ready to finish what he started. He is among them, but who? He has a brand new face.
Tara has had enough, time to turn the tables and make him suffer.  A woman unafraid of death is a dangerous thing. Has David finally met his match?

Excerpt & Giveaway: Not Her Gargoyle

Author: Annie Nicholas.
Genre: Paranormal Romance.

Blurb:

Ruby is done with jerks, dead-end jobs, and eviction notices. Everyone else she knows is finding ways out of this crappy neighborhood, so why can’t she? Since opportunities refuse to fall from the sky, Ruby makes her own. To hell with the little voice in her heart whispering about love. She never met a man she wanted to keep…then she met a gargoyle. Men were boring after all.

Nick was a con, a thief, and a rogue. He couldn’t keep a dime in his pocket even if it was glued. Then he met a ruby. Not one from the earth but one of flesh and blood. And ass. Let’s not forget the ass. Stealing her heart was now all he wanted.

He has a plan that could make both their dreams come true. It only involves an itsy-bitsy risk. All they must do is rob a witch.

Oh, and avoid the dragons.

Excerpt:

Ruby and her dress attracted all sorts of wrong attention on the way home. The worst was still trailing her, keeping to the shadows. It looked like only one guy. She hoped. For all she knew, he was herding her into a trap.
She crossed the street. Maybe the creeper would take a hint and realize she was onto him. A few steps more and she glanced over her shoulder.
Of course, he followed.
The liquor store was closed. It was the only place that would have been open this late. She balled her hands into fists. Fine, they’d do this the hard way. She turned the corner and spun around, pepper spray in hand.
The stalker came around the corner. His eyes widened at the sight of her.
Hers went wide as well at the sight of the winged beast landing behind the creeper. The creature picked up the stalker and shook him. “Leave her alone,” he shouted and tossed him to the other side of the street.
Ruby pressed the release button just as the beast’s face was lit up by a passing car. She gasped. Oh no, she recognized him.
He howled and covered his face, wings beating the air aimlessly, forcing some of the spray in her direction.
Bending over, she choked on the acidic air. She fell to her knees. Dumbass, she couldn’t believe she’d gasped in the pepper spray. That was such a rookie move but—but… “Nick,” she rasped and crawled toward him. “I’m so sorry.” At least, she thought it was Nick. “That is, you, right?”
“Yes.” He collapsed next to her, eyes bloodshot and raw. “You pepper sprayed me.” He sounded so hurt. Like she’d kicked his puppy.
Her heart stopped beating at light speed and she slapped his meaty shoulder. “You scared the shit out of me.” He’d also saved her. She wasn’t sure what to say. No one had ever done that before.
“I was trying to help you.” He wiped his nose with the back of his hand. “Fuck, this stuff burns.”
She coughed some more. “I know.” Her lungs felt like she’d blown up a hundred balloons. All at once.
“I need to rinse my eyes before they melt.” He rose on wobbly legs and peered into the night as if looking for a source of water.
“Come on.” She grabbed his big wrist and tugged. “You can use my bathroom to wash off.” She sounded like a three pack a day smoker. “It’s the least I can do.”
She scanned the street and there was no sign of her would-be attacker. Guiding Nick, she took him to her apartment building. She climbed the staircase to the top, leaning heavily on the rails. Fear had sapped the strength from her legs. Luckily, they didn’t encounter any of the other tenants. Who knew how they’d react to an eight-foot winged, muscle bound creature with bloodshot eyes?
She had hurt the gargoyle who had accidentally killed her sister. She should feel good about that, but he had also rescued her from Trixie when her sister had been blood crazed.
It wasn’t like Nick had pushed Trixie down those stairs. He had startled her, kind of like how he had startled Ruby when she’d pepper sprayed him. That was a bad habit he had to break.
A yellow paper was stuck to her apartment door. She unlocked it and entered, peeling the paper off as she walked through. She was quite familiar with eviction notices.
“This way.” She maneuvered the huge gargoyle and his wings through her small apartment to the bathroom and sat him on the edge of the tub. She ducked under a random wing spasm. “Stay still. You almost knocked me flat.”
“Sorry.” He pulled his wings in tight behind his back and they quivered.
Pouring water onto a face cloth, she waited for the coldness. She added soap and washed his face. Pepper spray was mixed in with an oily compound and soap did the best job to clean it off skin. As for poor Nick’s eyes, all she could offer were cold compresses.
He leaned into her touch, his hands snaking around her waist.
“Easy, mister.” Excitement fluttered in her stomach.
His cheeks were a darker gray in comparison to the rest of his skin. Broad shoulders filled the narrow space and his hands were big enough to wrap right around her. So huge and strong.
She almost purred. Funny how one supernatural had her running and this one made her want to rub against him. “Long time no see, Nick. I thought you had forgotten all about me.” She’d made it clear she found him attractive the last time they met. He’d never come back and she’d assumed the feeling wasn’t mutual.
“The dragons chained me to their castle after I helped Trixie escape.” He pulled her hand away from his face and kissed her knuckles. “What were you doing walking by yourself at this time of the night?”
She blinked at the reprimand. Because she had no one else to walk with wasn’t something she was ready to admit. “I can take care of myself, thank you very much.”
He kissed the tips of her fingers, one by one. “I noticed.”
The bathroom grew quiet as she watched him kiss the fingertips of her other hand. He sucked the oxygen from the room with those kisses and her head spun. “Want a beer?” she whispered with a rough voice. “I’d like to hear about your dragon adventure.”
Seriously, dragons and bondage. Roar. It was Christmas all over again.
“Sure.” He refreshed his cold compress before reapplying it to his eyes.
“Follow me.” She strode into the kitchen that was attached to the living room and opened her fridge. A half empty six-pack of beer, a bottle of ketchup, and a container of yogurt were the only things it contained. She pulled out two bottles and held one up to him.
He grinned and popped it open with his thumb. She bit her bottom lip. It had been a twist off. Damn. “Thanks, but my story is short. The dragons wanted to punish me for what happened with Trixie. I escaped tonight and wanted to make sure Trixie was adjusting to being a vampire.” He took a drink from the bottle and drained half of it.
“Oh.” Ruby clutched her unopened bottle. “She’s fine. Better than fine.” Better than her. “She moved in with that vampire.”
“Viktor?” He drained the remainder of his bottle.
“Yeah, they live over his tattoo parlor.” She offered Nick her beer. “That’s really sweet of you to drop in and check on her though.” She cleared her throat, wishing some strange guy would bother to do that with her. “You know, in the middle of your escape from the dragons and all.” She glanced out the window. “Is Eoin going to show up here again?” She hoped not. He scared her. It was one thing to admire a dragon from afar—quite another when he clung to her building with his claws.
Nick shook his head. “I lost him over the river. He won’t think to look for me here.” He finally met her gaze. “You look nice.”
She smoothed her dress over her hips, feeling self-conscious. “Thanks.” Three simple words yet the way he said them made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the world. She pressed her lips together and tried to figure out what to do with her hands now that they were empty. “Umm… have a seat.” What was wrong with her? Men never made her feel shy.
He settled on the couch, his wings taking up most of the space. “How have you been?” He leaned forward, elbows on knees, and…waited.
“Uh.” She sat in the chair next to him.
He leaned closer, still waiting.
“I’m broke, about to be homeless, and I hate my job.” She released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. It felt good to just let it all out.
“You have a job. That’s good.”
She gave him a crooked smile. “That’s a positive way to look at it.”
